How to strengthen your back, improve blood flow, and normalize inflammation

Dear Reader,

Do you know anyone with a balky back?  The typical scenario
has the person going about their activities of daily living like
a lithe pro athlete, and then, without any notice, they
stiffen up like a board and possibly slump over to lie down
because they threw their back out again.

Over the years, I've found this to be exceedingly common,
and few people seem to know how to effectively strengthen
their core to help prevent recurrent back sprains.

Yes, strengthening your abdominal muscles can help, but it's
also essential that you train your lower back to healthfully
contract when you are in positions that compromise the
stability of your core.

It's also critical that you ensure that your hamstrings are at
a proper length, as chronically tight hamstrings create a
downward pull on your pelvis, which causes instability
in your core region, predisposing your back ligaments and
muscles to sprains and strains.

For clients who are interested in effectively strengthening
their lower back, lengthen their hamstrings, and decrease
risk of back "pulls," the best exercise that I can recommend
is a form of a yoga stance called "Warrior Pose."

For the details on how to do this, please view:

It's also important to remember that injuries are far more
likely to occur early in the morning versus later on in the
day.

The reason for this is simple:  as you sleep - presumably in
a horizontal position - there is far less gravity for your heart
to do its work against in keeping your blood circulation going.

So during sleep, your heart decreases its overall output, which
leads to less overall perfusion of your tissues with oxygen
and nutrient-rich blood.  This is why all of us feel stiffer in
the morning, and for those who have weakened back ligaments
and muscles from years of recurrent sprains and strains, this
is why you can throw your back out yawning or waving at
your neighbour the wrong way first thing in the morning.

The lesson is this:  if given a choice, it's always better to
engage in vigorous physical activity later in the day.  As you
get up and move around, your heart increases its output,
which leads to better blood perfusion of your tissues, which
decreases risk of injury.

If you must participate in physically strenuous work early
in the day, be sure to do a thorough warm-up - if possible,
enough to cause you to sweat.

If you have a foam roller, you can gently roll your largest
muscle groups upon awakening to accelerate improved blood
flow to all of your tissues.  But even early morning foam
rolling should be performed with caution and only after you
have walked around for a few minutes.

Please don't forget to have a look at the form of Warrior
Pose described in the post above.

Sometimes, sub-optimal blood circulation that isn't helped
by movement and stretching can be due to chronic
accumulation of fibrin.  Fibrin is a protein that naturally occurs
in your body and is involved in helping your blood coagulate
when needed.

Your body is designed to break down unneeded fibrin over
time, but as we age, the pace of breakdown isn't always
fast enough to prevent unwanted accumulation within our
blood circulation and tissues.

When fibrin accumulates in our blood, increased viscosity
leads to less-than-optimal flow throughout the body, but
especially to the extremities.

When fibrin accumulates in specific tissues, it can impede
normal function - the most common place where this occurs
is in the lungs.

Fortunately, fibrin accumulation can often be fixed with
proteolytic enzymes like serrapeptase and nattokinase.  To
learn more about these enzymes and the blend that I
regularly use with clients to address a number of chronic
health issues, feel free to visit:

That's all for today,  Next time, I'll show you how to make
the world class cherry smoothie that I have some clients
take to address some types of arthritis.

Wishing you and yours a safe weekend ahead,

Thought of the Moment:

As a parent, I can never spend enough time meditating on
the following thought:

Our children will forget much of what we say and do, but
they will not forget how we consistently make them feel.

The same is probably true for all those we interact with, but
what an important reminder as we nurture and love the little
ones in our lives.

Most Important Stretch For Preventing Low Back Pain - Warrior Pose

Most Important Stretch For Preventing Low Back Pain

If I could choose just one exercise to do regularly to prevent low back pain, it would be the yoga pose that you see below. This simple pose - often called a form of "Warrior Pose" - combines two actions that I have found to be critical for preventing chronic low back pain.
DSC05252
The first action is to stretch your hamstrings. Your hamstrings are the thick muscles that line the back of your thighs. When you do Warrior Pose, the leg that you have rooted on the ground experiences an effective hamstring stretch as your other leg rises behind you.
The second action is to stabilize your core by strengthening your lower back muscles. Warrior Pose requires that you contract your lower back muscles as you bring one of your legs up behind you while keeping your upper body parallel with the ground.
If you find the Warrior Pose difficult to maintain, try doing it while using both of your arms to hold onto a stable surface, like a chair, table, or sofa.

Doing this won't take away from the two components of Warrior Pose that are important for low back pain prevention, and will actually allow you to perform Warrior Pose for longer stretches of time.
How long should you maintain Warrior Pose? For as long as you can comfortably maintain it while feeling your hamstrings stretch and your lower back muscles contract. If you haven't been physically active in some time, then I recommend beginning with just a second or two on each leg. As your stamina and physical condition improve, you can work your way up to holding the Warrior Pose for 10-30 seconds at a time on each leg.
How often should you do Warrior Pose? As often as you can without causing an uncomfortable strain in any of your muscles.
While doing Warrior Pose, please remember to maintain steady breathing. An effective way to promote steady breathing while doing any stretch is to make a conscious effort to keep your facial muscles relaxed. As you maintain Warrior Pose while breathing evenly, visualize your hamstrings becoming longer and stronger, and your lower back muscles becoming stronger as well.
If you have a health challenge with one or both of your knees that makes it difficult to do Warrior Pose on a fully straightened bottom leg, you can try this pose with your bottom leg slightly bent (flexed) - this will take some pressure off the surfaces of your knee joint, but won't take too much away from the hamstring stretch and the lower back contraction.
Additional Notes on Exercising and Stretching to Prevent Low Back Pain:
  • To understand why stretching your hamstrings is critical addressing chronic low back pain, view the following article:
Best Stretch for Chronic Low Back Pain
  • Many fitness and physical health care experts recommend doing abdominal exercises to strengthen your core trunk region. While I support this recommendation, my experiences have led me to believe that low back strength is just as important as abdominal strength for preventing low back pain. If you can regularly exercise both regions, I encourage you to do so. If you're just looking to do one exercise/stretch to begin with, the Warrior Pose is an excellent choice.
  • Warrior Pose and all other strenuous exercises should be avoided during episodes of acute low back pain. For more information on treating acute low back pain, view:

A New Malaysian Government

A New Malaysian Government

A New Malaysian Government-By Dr. Azmi Sharom.

Do your duty, circulate to every names on your list to refresh their mind and understanding. We really, really need to ensure every body understands well understood  the future of our country of ‘Malaysia’.
A New Malaysian Government  - win-win for all parties, including BN    In full agreement with the rationale of Dr. Azmi Sharom. All Malaysians stand to gain for voting PR into Government, and BN has the badly needed chance to clean up itself while in the Opposition, and to prepare to take over if PR does not perform!   It is a WIN-WIN for all parties!
This article by  By Dr. Azmi Sharom, a law lecturer, well educated, well read…a person who refuses to accept what is going on, who feels the injustice not only for the Malays as he too is a Malay but for all Malaysians  ……  he is really a anak Malaysia….
Actually, we will vote PR because We Still Love BN.  After all it was started by great and honest leaders of the past. It’s for the good of BN that we vote for PR and for better future for the people at the same time.   What happens, when PR become New Government: We have a New Government with Less Experience in CORRUPTIONS and SCANDALS….. good for people      We have a STRONG and RICH Opposition with 50 years Experience  in CORRUPTIONS and SCANDALS.  They know the ins and out of corruption and scandals, so they can better check the PR government…….. also good for people and for BN.   BN will do their BEST to EXPOSE those who are CORRUPT, because BN has 50 years of experience in CORRUPTIONS    Final Result: RAKYAT MENANG - a TWO  party system is……….. BORN. We vote for CHANGE……. because we LOVE………. MALAYSIA.
“The world is a DANGEROUS place not because of people who do EVIL, but because of good people who look on and  DO NOTHING ABOUT IT”    Albert Einstein.
All (including former) Malaysians must know – By Dr. Azmi Sharom If you have already watched this  (and I’m not surprised at all), just pass it on…. Dr. Azmi Sharom- All Malaysians must know.
Malaysia has never been an Islamic State as our Constitution is very specific on it. It was the Mental Mamak (our equivalent to Singapore ‘s MM) who lied all the way when he declared Malaysia as an Islamic Country and, therefore, State, in 2001. Lim Kit Siang immediately corrected him but he being the person he is, insisted that he was right. Jokers like Ling Liong Sik, Samy Vellu and Lim Keng Yaik, of course, did not object and quietly agreed with him and so did the other BN leaders.    This mamak has damaged our country through and through.
MM also passed the Syariah Law in Selangor in 1995  with the help of MCA, MIC, and Gerakan.
Ask MCA, MIC and Gerakan why they support an Islamic State and passed laws to support it, and now complain that DAP is supporting an Islamic State, when DAP has never ever agreed to do so..
The evidence is beyond doubt, it is in the public domain, ask them, the shameless ones, do they have an answer?   Worth listening to this recording. Our constitution is the most altered, amended, and modified constitution in the whole wide world.    We must never ever let UMNO get back their 2/3rds majority ever again. If they do, then our country will go to the dogs. UMNO will again start changing the constitution like there is no to-morrow. It will be changed to suit UMNO, just like they changed the constitution/rules/laws to allow for gerrymandering of the consituency, where a rural constituency with an electorate of 5,000 voters is entitled to vote for one MP/DUN, whereas in urban localities, an electorate of 100,000 can only vote for one MP. What sort of democracy do you call this? Can someone out there enlighten me. Whether you’re pro-BN or pro-opposition, please, do not, in your wildest dreams ever allow UMNO their 2/3rds majority.  Don’t ever let Malaysia go the way of Zimbabwe , Somalia, or Myanmar .
An interesting speech by Dr. Azmi Sharom; an Assistant Professor of Law at UM. He explains the CONSTITUTION: the Malaysian supreme law. Listen to this, it’s interesting and refreshing.
For people who think that only BN can govern properly. Think again. Once BN gets back their 2/3 in Parliament they will start amending the Constitution. Then we won’t have the Constitution that protects ALL. Educate yourself about what the supreme law of the land says.  Then vote wisely.
